I N D E P E N D E N T

UPDATE:
The organizer was found at Hobby Lobby and the small containers at Dollar Tree.

Can somebody say INDEPENDENT? Oh my, the joy in my heart to finally see some independence going on in my classroom. We are finally carrying on as independent learners and gathering our own materials, finding the appropriate tools we need and getting down to some serious work. Dice play such a huge roll in our math that this summer I went on a hunt for the perfect dice box and dice shakers to prevent those rolling, rambling dice across the room. I was determined each child would gather their own tools and the tools would have some level of differentiation and choice. BINGO! I got just what I was looking for!

Science Book Talk

In honor of Science Week on TBA I had to share one of my favorite books for budding kindergarten scientists.
The best part about this book is that the book characters are young children and it walks you through a seed investigation day by day in simple steps. And upon further investigation I would also recommend:
I am planning on reading this one over a period of a week.
And my new favorite! Now, after all of this who doesn't love the life cycle of a bean?

My Five Senses!

I am thrilled to finally be able to post this news. I have finally finished my I Can Be A Scientist My Five Senses Unit and I have uploaded it to my Teachers Notebook store. This unit was so much fun to research, test and create and is the foundation for setting up Kindergarten Scientific Investigation that promotes independent learners! I hope you join me on TBA for Science Week!
Let's encourage and help each other as we promote Science in the Kindergarten Classroom!

Integrated Writing

"I always borrow the teacher next door's hermit crab when teaching descriptive writing and language to my English learners. Nothing is better than seeing it up close under the document camera. :) I love to integrate writing in other subject areas." From Mrs. Parker at Learning With Mrs. Parker!

Give Me Some Independence! Daily 5

As I was reflecting on my class experiences over the last week, I was doing a lot of thinking about independence. Why in the world does it seem like such a slow process this time around? I went back through some notes on the subject and found this by THE SISTERS and thought I would share the link. And I probably need to just go ahead and retype it and plaster it on my walls to remind myself that this is the foundation to promoting a class full of independent learners and I need to just slow down a bit. As I was researching the topic, I found some good book suggestions to promote independence.
And finally, one of my favorites, a book about behaviors that take place due to a reward.
AMEN!

Integrated Writing

This easily was the highlight of my day. My little document camera and something really cool to observe with the lights out. We had a very good time writing about our observations. Which made me think... why could we not have integrated writing once a week during writer's workshop? Seriously, writing is writing no matter the subject. If you would like more integrated ideas follow me inside the lab. We are about to kick off Science Week on TBA!

My Five Senses!

The weather is changing and it is starting to feel a little like fall. As I was thinking of My Five Senses, I thought maybe this time I would put a little twist on this activity and make it seasonal.
Have you seen these mini candles from Bath and Body Works? I thought these could be great scent jars to use when learning about your sense of smell. After you are finished with the activities just take them home and light them up and think of nothing but the fall season. All in all, it's a win-win!

Brown Bear Unit Posted!

YAHOO! My 108 page Brown Bear, Brown Bear Math and Literacy Unit is finally posted to my Teachers Notebook Store I hope you join me and my class as we work through the unit! I had so much fun making it and trying it out with my class!

My Bucket Is Filled!

I earlier posted about reading How Full Is Your Bucket for Kids. After that reading I told the children that we would probably read the book again. I knew I would want to read it once my five new students were settled in my class. Since it was my second time to read the book, I was able to add a little bit more to it the second time around. As I read the book, and as a bucket was either being filled or spilled, I was able to make the visual connection by using clear cups, colored water and a pipette. This helped me to demonstrate how our actions or the actions of others, can either fill a bucket or slowly drip by drip empty a bucket. As the water moved back and forth, the children were silent and we were able to talk about what we observed and make the connection to understanding how that happened. This was a very successful addition to the book and it created a very meaningful community building activity for me and the children in my class. When I discovered this book this summer I was not clear how I would use the bucket system in my class but I knew I wanted to use it somehow. I decided on a community bucket that we would fill with marbles. I found the smallest bucket possible to use in the beginning. My message was simple... it will take us all to fill the bucket. We will work together to fill it and we will celebrate our collective goal when we reach it. I am happy to say we are half way there and we all know it takes us all doing our part...including me. They always say third time is a charm and when I read it a third time, I will make sure that my water level drip by drip is exactly the way it is in the book but sometimes you see a "teachable moment" and you just go for it!
As we finished the book, I asked the kids to spread out and get ready for the next activity as I prepared apples for a graphing activity. We all agreed we did not want to taste brown apples so I would be busy for a few minutes cutting apples. As I was preparing the apples, I could hear some bickering and some good problem solving language and when I turned around I saw my new class hand in hand in a circle waiting for me and actually they had planned a place for me to sit to taste apples with them. I stood there silent for a minute and realized they were working together and working their way through a few disagreements among some of the children but all in all they achieved the goal...and once again my bucket was filled.
As we moved in to our tasting and graphing activity, our helper dropped all of our fresh and clean apples on the floor. There was a few moments of silence and then we all laughed...together for a long time. After washing apples and finally tasting and graphing our favorites, I realized I am so lucky to be the teacher with the invisible bucket over her head that is dripping by the minute, not because my bucket is being spilled but because it simply is overflowing.
