Tattle Tale!

Boy was this the topic of discussion last week on the playground... When I ran across this I HAD to post this one. I saw this and loved it on Growing Kinders. I had no idea so many people knew about this and had pinned it. I want one so bad I am seriously thinking of just removing the Kleenex and getting out the craft supplies as soon as I run to my room tomorrow! I might have a few of these visible during Kinder conferences... hmmmm.

Halloween Phonological Fun!

Here's a quick game that you can make in a flash to be ready for some Halloween fun.
You will need:
A seasonal bag or bucket
Sentence strips or index cards with names of your children printed on them
Music
Music player
How to play:
Start the music and have the children pass the bucket around. When the music stops, the person holding the bucket pulls a name out of the bucket and shows the group. Everyone says the name that is printed on the card and then the class claps the syllables in the name. The game continues until all names are pulled. I LOVE this game and we have had so much fun with it. And I love the easy prep!

A special thanks goes out to CW in my district for providing us with engaging and fun ways to meet the needs of our children.

November Number Corner!

I have had lots of emails about the October Number Corner post from a few days ago and one of the most popular questions was teachers asking what my pattern would be for November. I finally decided I would use the book Setting the Turkeys Free for some inspiration because I LOVE this book. So, here is my plan... I am going to paint the children's hands with the palm brown and each finger a different color. The hand prints will be turkeys and I will just substitute the turkeys for the butterflies that is posted on the Bridges Blog for Number Corner. So basically I am following all of the advice part of the Number Corner but just changing the butterflies to turkeys. My turkeys will be put in the positions just like the butterflies they use. I will also back each turkey with a color pattern that will be determined by my class. Just click HERE if you would like to follow along and see the Bridges Blog for more information!

Number Corner October

I hesitated posting these photos because the quality of the photos were not that great. I have had some requests for the post so here we go! We followed our calendar pattern ABB and through tons of discussions we decided to make pumpkins with our hand prints and then add the pattern elements to that. Our pumpkin leaf was little, big, big and our pumpkin face color was black, yellow, yellow.
We used pre cut shapes to save time on this part because we spend so much time discussing and correcting our patterns as we go. I have learned that when the children are working on the calendar pieces and they can't see them all together, it is hard for them to visualize the pattern or patterns. It is hard for me also. We have had to go back to the calendar pocket chart and put the pieces in to see if we are correctly making the pattern. Doing this takes some time but the conversations and discussions are powerful problem solving discussions and believe it or not, the children fully take part in the problem solving process.
Using the pocket chart as you finish each step has been very helpful. So after we painted our pumpkins and then added leaves we put our pieces in the calendar pocket chart. We discussed the pattern for the faces while the unfinished cards were in the pocket chart and then we added the faces. We have done this so many times that the children can set up the calendar with minimal help. I have also learned that starting two weeks before the end of the month is also helpful especially when you are adding two or three different pattern elements.
If you are looking for more information to plan for November Number Corner in Kindergarten you can see the Advice for November information here. I found this information on the Bridges Blog. I LOVE the calendar pieces they offer and have used them in the past. You can get those calendar markers free so if you are running short on time, you can use those markers! When we make our own markers we use the calendar markers from the Bridges Blog just like a flash card. You can also use those markers to sequence numbers because they are perfect for that. And what about letting the children put the markers in the calendar OVER your existing markers as practice? I think I am giving that one a try!
If you love Number Corner as much as I do and have info or photos to share I hope you write to me! I would love to see what you do inside of your classroom.

Sensory Integration Help!

In class we have been working on our Science Center makeover and putting on the final touches before moving on to the next area that needs a makeover and I keep looking at my sand and water table that is really just a table at this point. I have wondered what I could do with it. I have searched for inspiration. I have asked every teacher I know what mysterious objects are hiding under their sand and water table top? It seems that we tend to overlook some areas of development because there is so much focus on other areas in order to prepare our children to move on to the next level. But I wonder how could we combine a sensory table and some letter identification, letter sounds or maybe even some syllable practice?
