I am teaming up with some great Kinder friends for a closer look at the Daily 5. If you are in here is how it works...Each Thursday the host for the next chapter will post questions for you before reading and also allow for you to ask questions in the comments. The following Wednesday, that blogger will post answers to that week’s questions and a reflection of that chapter. You will have an opportunity to link up each week too so the learning will continue to spread online. This should be fun! So, let’s get to chapter one’s questions.
1. How do I teach new behaviors?
I use the Gradual Release of Responsibility Model.
Step 1. Model
"I do, you watch."
Step 2. Guided Practice
"I do, you help."
Step 3. Independent Practice
"You do, I help."
Step 4. "You do, I watch."
This model really can be used for anything and everything. That being said, modeling the appropriate and inappropriate behaviors is essential and time should be allowed for this daily as a reinforcement.
2. How do I teach expectations?
As I am working through the Gradual Release of Responsibility Model, expectations are modeled and reinforced when we model the inappropriate and appropriate behaviors. After each learning session we meet together to reflect on our experiences. We discuss what went well and what we could do better. We use a thumbs up or down held to our hearts when we are reflecting. These discussions can be powerful when learning about expectations. We also create Anchor Charts together as a way of providing a visual representation of our learning goals, expectations and content information.
3. How do I monitor student behavior?
I believe modeling, discussing and reflecting lessons on the desired behaviors on an ongoing basis helps children to begin to gain independence and begin to self monitor.
4. What do you do when a student is not exhibiting the desired behavior?
We practice the desired behavior and sometimes that means every single one of us comes together and we discuss and MODEL the appropriate and inappropriate behavior. You would be surprised how good the kids get at this. In no time at all the children are modeling for the other children. I used to think this was not worth the time...and I was wrong! This is a powerful and necessary step!
5. Whose classroom is it?
I believe we are all learners in the classroom that we share.
6. Locus of control?
For the most part, I believe that the best rewards are the intrinsic rewards we get from knowing we did the right thing, a job to the best of our ability or helping when needed. And we discuss this a lot in Kindergarten. Most children come to us without having many defined expectations that they have had to live by and many times they have not had opportunities to be truly independent. In Kindergarten, they learn this for the very first time but they are completely capable even at this age. In my class, I want the children to learn to be proud of themselves and their accomplishments even if it is not recognized by others or rewarded.
7. Where are supplies stored?
Supplies are stored where they are used by the children so that they
can use them and return them independently.

You are sooo right about gradual release of responsibility - I think sometimes we think we've follow this and have actually skipped a few steps along the way. For this to work correctly - we will need to really watch ourselves and make sure we follow it! Teach them and they can do it!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the thoughtful post :0)
