And A FREEBIE!

Hey Kinder Friends,
Just in time for Back to School comes the book Too Much Glue. You know I was excited to preview and read this book because I love glue and all things creative and messy. And this book sure is a cute one especially for this time of year when we are out and about shopping for glue and thinking about how to introduce the good old glue expectations for kindergarten.

After reading the Amazon review of this book it kind of got that inner art teacher in me going! And here is what Amazon says:
Although Matty’s art teacher has warned him that too much glue never dries, Matty loves glue. After all, he and his dad make oodles of glue projects at home. One day during art class, Matty finds the fullest bottles of glue, and the fun begins. With a squeeze and a plop, Matty pours a lake of glue before belly-flopping right in the middle and finds himself stuck to the desk. When Matty’s dad arrives at the school, instead of being mad, he celebrates his son’s creativity and calls him a work of art. With vibrant language and artwork and a wild, silly plot, Too Much Glue is sure to appeal to all children who love to get messy.
Not only will this book appeal to children but it will appeal to any teacher who actually understands that glue expectations have to be taught to young children. You get what I am getting at. I thought so. And I am so sure we all have some fun and lively glue stories to tell...oh my.
At my school we do glue...as in bottles. There is no point in asking for sticks because we won't get them so we just deal with it. I could either run around for silly glue sticks or I could just deal with it. I don't do sticks or germy glue sponges. I do bottles and move on with life. I have bigger fish to fry in the scope of life. I am good with it. So, naturally I love the fact that I now have a book to go with the "glue pep rally" that takes place in my class year after year. I created the page you see above so that I could print it on colored paper like red, yellow or green and the children use a hole puncher with black paper for the dots. One by one they glue on the black dots. And the reason I say red, yellow and green paper is because in some years you might just need to do the glue lesson about three times! So now you are thinking that you want this book, right? Ok, I get it. Here is the deal. Leave a comment about glue for a chance to win a copy of the book. Yep, it is that simple. You don't have to follow me here or there to enter. I figure your here now and that is all it takes. I will pick a random winner with RNG and let you know who wins the book. And if you need a copy of the page just click on the image and there you go. And last, thanks for stopping by my little part of the world.

  7. I would love this book! We use bottles as well. Might as well teach them from the beginning! Once the blue topped bottle shot the little black lid to the ceiling and it stayed there for several years before it finally fell! Glenda Stephens -glstephens@clearwire.net

  16. Ok - my favorite glue story is when we were practicing dot dot not a lot. One little boy said, "But I like a lot!" and proceeded to squeeze really hard on the glue bottle. Well the lid popped off and he got "a lot" of glue everywhere. He then said, "Well maybe not that a lot!"

  20. Oh my gracious, this book is so exciting! I also use glue bottles with my kindergarten kiddos! I find that with a little practice, it is absolutely fine! I do use glue sticks for math journals simply for the fact that they dry quickly this way. However, I do have to buy these for myself. I think this book sounds awesome! Thank you for introducing it to me! I'm exciting about this giveaway, and this is an amazing freebie! THANK YOU!!

  24. I love when my kinders learn how to use wet glue!! It's a science and a wonderful fine motor experience. Last year I ran out of glue sticks and instead of wet glue being a choice to use, it became all that we had to use. Thank you for the freebee! I can't wait to read the book!

  25. I'm anxious to see and read the book....reminds me of a little song...and I think it was by Raffi or Joe Scruggs (sorry, I can't remember)...about a little kid using too much glue and they couldn't go to recess until the glue had dried. Could probably come up with something pretty cute using Sugarland's "You and me baby...We're stuck like glue".
Great idea gluing the dots on the apple!
    Thanks for the giveaway!

  26. I just checked our supply list for this year and for the first time glue sticks are not on it! I love glue sticks...although I swear it seems like the kids eat them, we go through them so fast! Last year I used a similar dot glue picture to teach the incredibly technical skill of tiny dots and I do think the extra time was worth it. This book looks darling and would absolutely be perfect with a "glue lesson". Thanks for the chance to win!

  36. Thank you, I am soo excited about the possibility of getting this book. We also use glue bottles, there is always that one or two kiddos that love their glue and will glue anything and everything in sight. I do try to find the positive of bottle glue, one, they truly help with their fine motor skills, this in turn helps with their writing...sorry I am off on a tangent... thank you again for the chance to win this amazing book.

  38. It looks like a fun book!! I am trying the glue sponge this year... My husband has a plan to fight the germies... He brews beer and we plan to use some of his sterilant in the water to keep the sponges clean.

I also get students that speak no english at all on the first day so I like to wait until they understand a little more English before I explain it clearly.

I also plan to introduce glue bottles too but probably not the first few weeks of school.. This will be great when I do get to introduce it.

  46. The book sounds fun! Here is a glue tip I use-Sam's Club (or a similar type store) has "condiment cups" or the Dollar Tree has plastic "shot glasses" that work perfect for glue! I put a little in for each student or for two to share and give them q-tips. I like that so much better than giving them the whole bottle to squeeze out big globs!! (No matter how much I say "You only need a tiny bit!" Ha! Ha!)

  47. I love to use glue in my preschool classroom, and I can get glue sticks but I don't like them. We do ladybug glue dots, and we do sheets with colored glue and paper reinforcements to teach how much glue is a dot.

This looks like such a fun book!

  48. Glue ---- my nemesis. Sticks, bottles, maybe this year the sponges? It takes so long to teach the kids how to use them properly. Some will succeed, others will never get it. Hadn't thought about this all summer, til now! ;)

  100. I am a couponer and I was a first year teacher last year. Naturally expecting to use a lot of glue sticks in K, I ran around all the back to school specials and bought at least 50 of the little glue sticks. Big mistake! As I learned last year, those tiny glue sticks do not last more than, what, two uses? Fortunately, our parents sent in plenty of the big glue sticks for us so all was not lost! This year I plan to use real glue with my kiddos, scary as that sounds!

  116. I prefer to teach the students to use glue. I am one of the few in my building that use it...I actually give away my glue sticks. I incorporate glue and The Three Bears. After I read the story I use a piece of colored construction paper (to see the glue better) then make the Papa Bear drop/"glue bath...way tooo much glue, Momma Bear drop/a drop that is big enough that when you hold the paper up it will start to run down the page and finally the Wee Bear drop/ a small drop. Then we vote to see which one will dry the quickest...most go for Papa Bear. I leave them on a table and we check it out during the day. All year long I ask what size drop and the class says "a Wee Bear drop". This book could be an added bonus!

I give the glue sticks we get to my 4th grade teacher friend. Everything seems to stick better with bottle glue. The book looks really cute.

  123. Last year was my first year in kinder and we used glue sticks. It seemed like we went through them like candy and I constantly found random pieces from projects that had fallen off. This looks like a great book & a new direction for this next year.

  125. My kids are usually great with glue. We use the phrase, "Dot, dot, not a lot!" I get bottles and glue sticks, but give the sticks to my 4th grade teacher friend. Everything seems to hold better with bottle glue. The book looks really cute.

  126. I prefer to use glue bottles over the sticks. They work so much better, and the glue sticks can get messy too if they aren't used correctly! It's all about teaching the littles how to use glue!

  132. This book looks AMAZING! Whether I win or not, thank you for introducing me to a new book!! We have the same problem, where most of the kids don't have glue sticks and a lake of glue ends up being used for the tiniest project! This would be a great way to start a lesson on glue!

  134. I think one of the best ways for children to learn glue moderation is to let them experiment with too much glue. Once they see that too much glue gets messy, sticky, and takes a while to dry, they'll understand why less glue is more!

  135. At my school we ask for glue sticks and parents do send them to school. When we run out of them we use glue bottles for the remaining of the year. This sounds like a fun book to read and I would love to win a copy!

  136. Glue lessons are always so unfriendly to me. Once the kids get the hang of only a dot, I love white glue over glue sticks any day. I love the freebie and the book is a wonderful find! LOVE IT!

  137. We use glue sticks, but there are times you still need the bottles of glue. I am anxious to try this book with my little ones.

  138. :( So sad this book doesn't come out till September 1. I would so love to have this book for my kinders. We start back in 2 weeks. Maybe I will do glue sticks for a month and then introduce glue:) I think this book is precious!

  141. Oh how I hate glue sticks! This book looks like so much fun and the free printable is excellent. I am moving back to Kindergarten after about 9 years in other grades and i certiantly plan to teach my kiddos how to use an actual glue bottle - even if I have to purchase all the glue bottles myself. (since the grade level requested sticks:()

  142. I love the idea of practicing using glue! I taught first grade last year and we used glue sticks though I want to use glue bottles this year. We had an inservice on foldables and the woman told us she used with her kids the four dot rule: dot dot not alot :)

  143. Wasted glue is a thorn in my side! So is waiting for those projects with 12 cups of glue to dry. Perhaps this book would help with that!

  147. I love letting kids be creative and messy, but I agree with teaching them to use it properly! I always tell the daycare kids a little bit goes a long way! Even if I don't win I would like to add this to my collection for my future classroom to teach kids the concept of correctly using the right amount of glue each year!

  148. I love glue too and hate the mess. This book looks perfect to help teach proper use of those glue bottles although this year pinterest conviced me to try those "germy" glue sponges. LOL Love your blog!

  150. We love glue in my Kinder class. From day one we TRY to teach the " a little dab will do ya" rule. Sometimes it works, some time not so much, but hey...it's all in the name of fun, childhood and learning.

  151. What a great new find! We use both bottles of glue and sticks. I start the year with glue bottles because I like that it helps develop those hand muscles as the kids learn to control the bottle. When I introduce glue sticks later in the year you'd thought it was an amazing new invention!

  152. Uff da! I'm switching to kindergarten this year from 1st and 2nd, and this scares me a little that I have to explicitly teach glue expectations...and so much more! This books sounds like the perfect tool to do it with :) Thanks for the freebie!!

  153. Oh this book would be perfect for my little 4 year olds. Going to second year of teaching, i did not realize until the first week of school that you had to explicitly teach how to use glue sticks and liquid glue. We use the liquid glue sometimes with paintbrush when they have large surface areas to glue. w This book would be a great opening to teaching my students all about using the glue. Also, thanks for the great freebie.

  155. Gluing is a life skill. Last year Autumn had a volunteer that took apart glue lids and put Vaseline on them. I think it did help some on making it easier to get tops screwed closed.

  157. I am looking forward to the coming year, but not looking forward to the glue experiments that inevitably happen-last year, I had a kindergartener write his name in glue---while I was impressed, the janitor was not!

  158. At school we use both glue and glue sticks- depending on the project. I would love to have this book to help with the little glue lesson. I am planning to use it this year. I always have trouble with them knowing if the glue bottle is open or closed. Do you have any secrets for teaching them that?

  163. Ah, kindergarten and glue. That moment when you look out to see 20+ kinders glue in hand for the first time and have that moment of "what was I thinking!" It never fails, one will always say "my mom NEVER lets me use glue". They always do fine.....we practice A LOT and I make a big deal out of getting their glue license. Would love to have this book. :)

  164. Ha ha! This looks like a great book! At the beginning of last year, I had a Kindergarten girl who had glue on her fingers during one of our first projects. Next thing I know, she is licking the glue off of her fingers. She claimed, "I didn't know what to do with the glue!" Later that day she broke out in hives. Perfect. "A dab of glue will do" didn't cover what to do when glue gets on your fingers!! Now I know... Thanks for the freebie!

  169. I actually LOVE glue in the bottle (we do have the good fortune get gluesticks--they're more convenient). But as you seem to have figured out based on the ADORABLE practice page you made, it can become a hot mess quickly!!! The story looks like a keeper, especially for Kinderkids! I am definitely going to try the apple to get them in the mindset of less is better !! thanks so much!!

  176. I love to use glue and the bottled glue! Not a big fan of glue sticks. I will confess that I was the child in the late 70's that ate the paste at school. I also went thru a lot of glue as a child because I loved putting it on my hands and letting it dry so I can peel it. My 2nd confession is last year at age 39 I was bored one day at school why my K4 kiddos were napping that I played with glue drying on my hands.

  183. I teach Pre-K and have tried different things to help the kiddos have more control over the amount of glue that they use for a project. A few years ago a teacher friend gave me these little glue bottles with a brush lid. Kind of like the rubber cement bottles we used to use in school but smaller and the bottle was clear. The brush actually helped the children use just a little glue. My bottles have since seen better days so now I put a little glue in a bowl with the small paint brushes that come with the water color kits. It helps control the amount of glue and helps my kiddos with their fine motor skills!

    Love your blog!!!

  189. I love glue bottles. I don't like glue sticks because they don't last and kinders forget to put the tops back on. I teach my kinders how to use glue in a variety of ways the first couple of weeks. We even have a song to go with it. I fill up a large dawn dishwashing bottle with more glue and show the kids how they can refill it their bottle when needed without making a mess. They love that!! I love the book you described and the message it sends. I 'd love to win the book. I will put it on my wish list too!!
