A Thanksgiving To Remember...

I can't believe it is that time again. Thanksgiving time is one of my favorite times inside a Kindergarten classroom. All the hustle and bustle getting ready for a Kindergarten feast and talking about all things that make us feel so thankful inspires me to want to create a classroom where...
Being thankful is something to remember.

As we prepare for our celebration in Kindergarten we share the stories about our own customs, celebrations and traditions. One of my favorite stories to tell my class is how I remember preparing for my Kindergarten Thanksgiving when I was five. And we talk about what we are all looking forward to this Thanksgiving.

The story of the first Thanksgiving is something we talk about in class. We use this event in history and put the events in chronological order, discuss the similarities and differences in family customs and traditions and retell the story of the first Thanksgiving.

One sure fire way to get the kids retelling is through story retelling bracelets. This way they have the visual reminder of each part and it makes remembering a lot easier. We always have fun making these in class and wearing them home. This activity and lesson is by far one of my favorites and it is a great way to begin the season of all things thankful.

CCSS.Math.Content.K.CC.A.3 Write numbers from 0 to 20. Represent a number of objects with a written numeral 0-20 (with 0 representing a count of no objects).
CCSS.Math.Content.K.CC.B.4b Understand that the last number name said tells the number of objects counted. The number of objects is the same regardless of their arrangement or the order in which they were counted.
CCSS.Math.Content.K.CC.B.4c Understand that each successive number name refers to a quantity that is one larger.

Reading/Comprehension

Social Studies

Math
K.2(A)  count forward and backward to at least 20 with and without objects.
(B)  read, write, and represent whole numbers from 0 to at least 20 with and without objects or pictures.
(C)  count a set of objects up to at least 20 and demonstrate that the last number said tells the number of objects in the set regardless of their arrangement or order.
(D)  recognize instantly the quantity of a small group of objects in organized and random arrangements.
