Dreaded Glitter Germs!

This one is for you Heidi! If you have looked at my blog sidebar you probably have noticed the post Glitter Germs. It is usually the most popular post day in and day out. This post is like a big pile of lingering germs for me. I swear, I just don't get it. The funniest part about this post is that my family and close friends now ask me how the good old glitter germs post is doing because it has been around for months. The fact is, it is still the most popular post and none of us can figure out why. The best part is that not a single person has ever asked me if I made it or bought it that way. And just when I thought glitter germs was forgotten, I got an email asking me how. I had to laugh.

Glitter germs were made by using Germ-X and cosmetic super fine glitter. You would not want to use any other kind of glitter in case it gets into your eye. I put it on my hands, pretended to cough and then started shaking hands with each child to a Dr. Jean song, Hello Neighbor. They started noticing the glitter right away and it transferred very well. When the song was over we had our discussion, washed our hands and notebooked about our experience. We even investigated our germs with hand lenses.

I wondered if the lesson was a success. The following morning several children walked into the room coughing and told me I had made them sick with all my GERMS! And since that time I have never had to mention to wash your hands again... In fact, I have another problem. I regularly have to beg for more
GERM-X and Clorox wipes to keep things clean because we clean so much. I guess I put the fear in everyone about spreading germs that make you sick and how important it is to hand wash! I think my school nurse would be proud!

So, have fun giving this one a try, but just be careful because GLITTER GERMS have a tendency to linger

What a cute idea for teaching about germs and handwashing! This year I hung posters up to tell my students step-by-step how to wash their hands. Thanks for sharing this idea!

Well! Thanks so much for telling me how to make those glitter germs!!! I'm so glad I asked! I figured I must be the only person in the world that didn't know where to buy them! Okay, so now where do you get the Cosmetic Super Fine Glitter???? Is that a Target item, or a beauty supply shop type of item? How much of it do you need? Did it color the whole container of it green, or did you have to add green food coloring?
See, now I am FULL of stupid questions!!!! (The reason why is because I want to try it in my classroom and then include it in my science presentation for ITK in Vegas next summer, LOL!!!!) All credit will be given to YOU, of course!
