Celebrating Black History!

Hello Kinder Friends,
At my school celebrating Black History is an event rather than a day which we all seem to love and want to be involved in. I always am on the lookout for new activities and ideas to incorporate into learning about the people and their contributions that have shaped Black History. I was given the assignment of a coloring contest as part of our Black History program last year. I wanted to be able to do something other than color with my class. I found the printables you see above on education.com. I decided to let the children pick a person who contributed to Black History and we learned about our picks. I was also given some leftover art materials from our art teacher. Considering we had so many of the coloring pages, we experimented with the materials and created a mixed media mural. Although it was created without a real plan I loved the way it looked and I was proud of how my children directed the project.

As I was collecting things for this event this year I was happy to add to my collection some video clips! And considering we now have access to these videos in my district I was excited to use these in Kindergarten this year.

Just love this one!

Told by a Kinder Kid! Love this so much!

As part of our Black History celebration in Kindergarten, we perform a skit in honor of Rosa Parks. We use this book with a little modification.

As we dig deeper into our study of Black History and learn about all the contributions of such wonderful people that have made such a difference I hope to share that with you here.

We have a Black History Celebration event too! Last year every grade sang a song or danced, but this year we are putting on a play! Such a great way to get the whole school together! :)
